Academic Writing Consultation

target group:
Corvinus community

Wednesday
16.00-17.00
(term time)

Registration

The aim of these consultation sessions is to help members of the Corvinus community (from undergrad to PhD student and lecturer level) in effectively communicating their ideas in writing in an academic setting in the English language. Participants are encouraged to bring drafts of their ongoing writing projects and they will receive expert advice on how to improve their writing in terms of structure, argumentation, style and language. We offer advice on term papers, BA and MA thesis, PhD dissertations, conference abstracts and scientific papers.

Those interested in improving their writing skills are also strongly encouraged to participate in the training sessions on Academic Writing and Academic English. While these two training sessions are closer to a classical classroom experience, the consultation sessions give you the opportunity to receive tailor-made advice from an expert on your actual writing project.

Location: Consultation Room No.111 (1st floor)

You will learn about how to generate and organize your ideas and then put them into a written form to ensure maximum impact with your intended audience. The training will cover issues such as choosing a topic for your paper, generating and organizing ideas, assessing the intended audience, planning the optimal structure and organization of your paper and deploying an effective argumentation and appropriate style. We will also discuss appropriate citation practices and how to avoid the pitfalls of plagiarism.

This training is aimed at a broad audience from the undergraduate to the researcher level. Thus, we will be discussing different genres such as term paper, BA or MA dissertation, PhD thesis and a research paper.

The training will be accompanied by a consultation session where interested participants will have the chance to discuss their actual work with the instructor and receive advice.

The aim of this training is to help researchers at Corvinus University (PhD students and lecturers) to produce high-quality English-language research output. Publishing in prestigious scientific journals and participation at conferences is a must for researchers; and in the competitive international arena of modern science, even the most original ideas need to be carefully packaged and presented in order to get the hearing that they deserve. At the most basic level, this means a text which is free of grammatical and punctuation errors and has a style appropriate for a scientific paper. At a higher level, it means a text which is clearly organized, concise, to the point and easy to read for the intended audience.

This training is meant for researchers who already know what they intend to write about (and, ideally, already have a draft version) but want to make sure that their piece is written in excellent English and has a form and structure which ensures maximal impact with the intended audience. This means that in this course, we will be not so much concerned with the idea generation and idea organization phase of academic writing and with issues of citation practice and plagiarism (see our separate training on these and other related topics here). Rather, we will focus on issues of grammar, word choice, style and punctuation, and on clarity, coherence and clear and effective argumentation. The types of text we cover will include: conference abstracts, original research papers and review articles.

The training will be accompanied by a consultation session where interested participants will have the chance to discuss their actual work with the instructor and receive advice.
